What Are the Signs a House Needs Rewiring?
A house tells you when its wiring is wearing out, if you know what to look for. The clearest signs are a fuse box with old rewireable fuses or a wooden back, rubber or fabric-coated cables that are going brittle, sockets that feel warm or look scorched, lights that flicker or dim, and simply too few sockets so extension leads end up doing all the work. Round-pin sockets, black rubber switches and a burning smell around fittings all point the same way. One or two of these on their own may just need a repair; several together usually mean the installation has had its day.
Age is the biggest clue: much of Lanarkshire's housing, from the tenement flats and terraces around Wishaw and Cambusnethan to the post-war semis at Netherton and the ex-council stock across Motherwell and Hamilton, was wired long before today's standards. The only way to know for certain is a proper inspection. As a SELECT-registered contractor we carry out an EICR that tests the whole installation and tells you plainly whether a full rewire, a partial one or a simple repair is what's actually needed, tested and certified to BS 7671 and the Scottish building standards, and we'll never recommend a rewire you don't need.
Look at the fuse box first
Rewireable fuses, a wooden back or no safety switches are the surest sign the wiring behind it is dated too.
Warmth and scorching
Sockets that feel warm, buzz or show scorch marks mean loose or failing connections, and shouldn't be left.
Checked for certain
An EICR tests the whole installation, so you get a straight answer rather than a guess, tested and certified to BS 7671.
Your questions, answered
Does an older home always need a full rewire?
Not always. Plenty of older Lanarkshire homes only need a partial rewire or a few repairs, and a modern fuse box can often be added on its own. An EICR tells us which, and we'll only recommend the full job if the wiring genuinely needs it.
How long does a rewire take?
One to two weeks for a typical three-bedroom home, depending on size and whether you're living in it. We work room by room, keep the power on overnight where we can and give you a clear day-by-day plan before we start.
Will I have to move out?
Usually no. We work room by room and keep disruption down, protecting floors and furniture and making everything good afterwards. For bigger jobs it's sometimes quicker with the house empty, and we'll tell you honestly which suits.
